Ernst Toll married Frederike Lange in 1864. Both were born in and lived in the Mecklenburg-Strelitz area of Germany, located in the north and east part of the country, about 50 miles north of Berlin. They lived in the city of Alt Kabelich, where Ernst was mayor at one time. They had nine children in 17 years, only four survived into adulthood.
Ernst died in 1908 in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, at the age of 72.
Frederike died on March 1, 1897 in Germany at the age of 53.
Their children were:
Of their nine children, Carl, William, and August came to America, settling in and around Ripon, Wisconsin.
Johann Karl (Carl) Friedrich Toll was born on March 19, 1864, in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany. He married Wilhelmine (Lena) Friedricke Caroline (Dehn) Daehn in 1884.
At age 24, Carl and Caroline left Bremen, Germany for Baltimore, arriving on November 17, 1887. They traveled to the United States with their children August (age 4) and Wilhelm (William, age 2). Accompanying them were Lena's mother, Maria Daehn (age 60) and Lena's brother August Daehn (age 19).
The Baltimore Passenger list identifies Lena as Carl's wife. However there is also a marriage record filed in the State of Wisconsin indicating that Carl and Lena were married in Wisconsin on Dec 5th, 1887 - shortly after they arrived in the U.S. The marriage record lists "additional circumstances: yes, they have 2 children before marriage." Perhaps they believed they needed a marriage recorded in the U.S.?
Note that Wilhelmine (Lena) is a Dehn/Daehn/Dahn--many Tolls and Dehns travelled from the Mecklenburg area and settled in Wisconsin.
Carl and Lena had six children:
Carl died on June 30, 1942 in Oshkosh Wisconsin at the age of 78, and is buried at Hillside Cemetery.
Lena died on July 25, 1945 at the age of 78, and is buried at Hillside Cemetery.
William Toll was born on January 13, 1869 in Germany. His father Ernst was 25 and his mother Friederike Lange was 25.
William immigrated to the United States in 1892. He married Elizabeth Schroeder on November 28, 1894, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Elizabeth had a son Albert who was 1 year old when they married. William raised Albert as his son, whether any official adoption occurred is unknown. William is our Toll connection but we know, this is not a "blood" connection.
William and Elizabeth lived on Elizabeth's father's farm where they raised their three sons Albert, Edward, and Fred. They stayed on the farm from 1900 to 1917. (A 1910 plat map shows the property in William's name) About 1917, William and Elizabeth moved to town, residing at 316 Blackburn in Ripon, WI. They rented their farm to the newly married Albert Toll and Martha Scheer.

Lloyd recalls that William was a musician, playing in the town band. The 1917 Ripon College Yearbook shows this reference to William being a member of the Edgar Zobel Concert Orchestra.
William died on July 17, 1918, in Ripon, Wisconsin, at the age of 49, and is buried at Hillside Cemetery.
August Johann Karl Friedrich Toll was born on November 18, 1879, in Kaebelich mit Petersdorf, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany. His father, Ernst, was 43 and his mother, Caroline, was 36.
In October of 1901, August immigrated to the United States. He landed in Maryland and made his way to Wisconsin where his brothers Carl and William lived. He may have stayed with one of them for a time until he got his feet on the ground.
He married Bertha Louise Gauger Wilke November 5, 1911, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This was the second Marriage for Bertha.
By 1918, August was farming in Brandon, Fond Du Lac county, Wisconsin. He registered for the WWI draft, and in 1942 registered for the WWII draft.
Bertha Louise passed away on July 1, 1958, in Brandon, Wisconsin at the age of 79. They had been married 46 years.
August died on May 14, 1961 at Trinity Memorial Hospital in Cudahy, Wisconsin when he was 81 years old.
August and Bertha had two children:
August and Bertha had four other children, from Bertha's previous marriage to Reinhard Ernest Wilke:
