Katharine Schick

b. 8 Aug 1867, d. 29 Aug 1939

Katharine was born in Felsendorf (now Lubaczow, Poland), but had moved Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine) by the time she was 18 in 1885. Lemberg and Dornfeld were about 20 miles (32 km) apart, but somehow the paths of Katharine Shick and Johann Franzman crossed, as they were married in 1892. The family story is that they met in church; one family or the other travelled a ways to get there!

Johann left for the United States shortly after they married, and Katharine followed 4 months later in August of 1892. More on their story can be found on Johann Franzman's page.

Slightly Deeper Roots

The Schick roots go back to the Bad Krueznach district in Rheinland-Pfalz Germany, about 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Frankfurt. The Schicks likely immigrated to Galicia to take advantage of benefits offered by the Austrian Empire to settle there and establish a German/Austrian presence in the east. The Rheinland-Pfalz area of Germany had also been subject to on-and-off-again wars with the French, of which many Germans had had enough.

The early Schicks and Franzmanns lived about 13 miles (22 km) apart from each other in Germany. Wonder if they could have known each other?

Katharine's great-great-great grandparents Johann Phillip (Sr.) and Maria Magadlena (Hohn) moved from Bad Krueznach Germany to Felsendorf, Galicia sometime after 1764. This city is now Cieszanow, Poloand. They had four children then: Johann Philipp II, Gerhard, Jacob Heinrich, Johann Peter, and Bernhard.

"Our" Katharine's great-grandfather was Johann Philipp II who married Maria Elizabeth Bauer. Their son, Jakob Daniel married Wilhelmina Klein. They are Katharine's grandparents, her father Bernhardt's parents. The Schicks have many branches in their tree. Someday I will dig further into that family.
